Lake Vouliagmeni: the warm-water lake that swims all year
Set into the rock beneath a sheer cliff is a lake that stays bath-warm through January. Small fish nibble your feet and the whole place runs like a quiet open-air spa.
Lake Vouliagmeni is the odd one out on this coast: not a beach, not a pool, but a natural brackish lake. Underground thermal springs hold the water at roughly22–29°C every month of the year. It sits on the Vouliagmeni headland, about 40 minutes up the coast from Anavyssos, close enough for a spontaneous half-day, far enough that it feels like an excursion.

What the lake actually is
The roof of a limestone cave collapsed thousands of years ago, leaving an open-air basin ringed by rock. Sea water mixes with fresh water from underground springs and warms geothermally as it rises, so the temperature barely moves between August and January. The water carries a faint mineral, slightly sulphurous note the regulars associate with skin relief. Officially it is a spa-tourism centre; honestly, a warm, still, very swimmable lake with a cliff for a backdrop.
Sharing the water are the Garra rufa, the little “doctor fish”. They gather in the shallow edges; sit on a submerged step with your feet still and they’ll get to work within a minute. It tickles; it doesn’t hurt. Swim a few strokes out and the deep middle is all yours.

One seasonal caveat: in winter only the Main Deck stays open. The cabanas, comfort sets and the Privé area close for the season. That’s no loss; the Main Deck is the lake anyway.
A day at the lake: how it works
Most people do the Main Deck: a broad boardwalk of sunbeds, chaise lounges and tables, first-come first-served, with steps straight into the lake. By early afternoon on a July weekend the best beds are taken. Lifeguards are on duty, there are changing rooms, showers and free parking, and a small shop sells the swimsuit or goggles you forgot.
The premium tier (comfort sets, cabanas for two or four, the Privé area) is reservation-only, booked online in advance, and it buys a guaranteed, quieter spot with service. It also changes the economics: entry plus a premium set plus lunch moves the day from “pleasant outing” into “luxury beach club” pricing. Go in knowing which day you want.
Outside food and drink aren’t allowed in, but the on-siteabraOvata restaurant and snack bar cover lunch and coffee with a view over the water. No pets, except on the restaurant terrace. The whole site is accessible, the Main Deck step-free.
The honest family caveat
The water starts chest-deep: metal and wood steps go straight into depth. No shallow shelf, no paddling edge, no sand for a bucket and spade. For confident swimmers and older kids it’s a brilliant day; for toddlers it means arms-length supervision from the first minute. Crews that mostly want to splash are better off at the beaches near Anavyssos; the lake is the treat for the swimmers.
When to go
Summer has the buzz and the longest hours, but the lake’s secret season is October through April: when every beach on the coast is a wind-swept photo, the lake is still a warm swim. A grey December morning with steam off the water and the place half-empty is the best version of it. Shoulder-season weekdays are the sweet spot: small crowds, and water exactly as warm as in August. Pair it with the coast — a lake morning, lunch up the road, and the Cape Sounion sunset to finish — and you have the strongest single day this coastline offers.
Getting there from the house
From Kleos it’s a straight run up the coast road toward Athens: about 40 minutes, the sea on your left the whole way. The coastal KTEL buses on the Athens–Sounio route pass Vouliagmeni too, though with less flexibility than a car. Are the doctor fish real?
Real, and they will find you. The lake is home to Garra rufa, the small “doctor fish” used in foot spas. They gather in the shallower edges and gently nibble dead skin if you sit still with your feet in the water. It tickles more than anything; swim out into the deeper middle and they leave you alone.
Is Lake Vouliagmeni good for children?
With a caveat. Entry is down steps straight into chest-deep water for an adult; there is no shallow beach or paddling area. Confident swimmers and older kids have a great day; toddlers need arms-length supervision the whole time. Add the entry price and it’s a premium family outing rather than a casual beach day.
