Lavrio — your island gateway, 15 minutes away
Most people sail to the islands from Piraeus. From here, the nearer door is a working harbour fifteen minutes east — and it’s the easy way to Kéa, Kythnos and the quieter western Cyclades.
Fifteen minutes east of the villa, the port of Lavrio is the Athenian Riviera’s real island gateway — and the part most guides get wrong.
The classic Saronic islands — Aegina, Hydra — leave from Piraeus, and Mykonos, Tinos and Andros from Rafina. But for Kéa, Kythnos and the quieter western Cyclades, Lavrio is the closest and easiest port — close enough that a spontaneous island day is genuinely on the table: a morning ferry to Kéa, a long lunch by the water, an evening return to your own terrace.
Crossings from Lavrio (summer)
| Kéa (Tzia) — several sailings/day | ≈ 1 hr |
| Kythnos | ≈ 1 hr 20 |
| Western Cyclades — Serifos, Sifnos, Milos | occasional, slower |
For the headline Cyclades — Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Paros — the bigger gateways are Piraeus (everything, most frequent) and Rafina (Mykonos, Tinos, Andros). Lavrio’s strength is being the nearest, easiest port for Kéa, Kythnos and the quieter western isles. Summer (June–September) frequencies are far higher than the rest of the year.
Out in the morning, back for sunset — the island day that starts and ends at the house.
The port town itself
Lavrio is no tourist set-piece — it’s a working harbour, which is the appeal. There’s a daily fish market on the quay and a row of old-school tavernas where the catch comes off the boats, and a history most people never suspect: the ancient silver mines here funded the Athenian navy that won at Salamis. The small Mineralogical Museum tells that story.
Good to know
How far is Lavrio port from The View House?
About 15–20 minutes east by car. It’s the closest ferry port to the villa — the natural launch point for an island day or longer hop.
Which islands can you reach from Lavrio?
Kéa (Tzia) is about an hour away with several sailings a day in summer; Kythnos a little over an hour. There are also slower, roughly weekly sailings to the western Cyclades (Serifos, Sifnos, Milos). The headline Cyclades — Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Paros — are better reached from Rafina or Piraeus.
Can you do Kéa as a day trip from the villa?
Yes — with several sailings a day in summer and a one-hour crossing, a morning ferry from Lavrio and an evening return makes an easy island day. Off-season the service thins out.
Do ferries to Aegina, Mykonos or Santorini leave from Lavrio?
No — Aegina and the Saronic islands (Poros, Hydra) sail from Piraeus (~55 min away); Mykonos, Tinos and Andros from Rafina. Lavrio is the nearest port for Kéa, Kythnos and the western Cyclades.
